Mt. Kanchenjunga (8586m), the third highest mountain in the world lies on the border of Nepal & Sikkim. It was believed to be the highest mountain in the world from 1838 until 1849. It is the most easterly of the great 8,000 meter peaks of the Himalaya with an enormous mountain mass, and many peaks rise from its narrow icy ridges. The peak was first attempted in 1905 but was succeeded only in 1955 by a British team. The name Kanchenjunga refers Five Treasuries of Great Snow which means five high peaks that rise from the surrounding glaciers. Avalanches are common in these peaks.
